Buster Keaton was a comedy king of the Silent Film era. The General is considered one of the greatest films ever made, and your Anchorage Symphony screens this masterwork premiering a new score by Eric Beheim. This film finds hapless Southern railroad engineer Johnny Gray (Buster Keaton) facing off against Union soldiers during the American Civil War. When Johnny's fiancée, Annabelle Lee (Marion Mack), is accidentally taken away while on a train stolen by Northern forces, Gray pursues the soldiers, using various modes of transportation in comic action scenes that highlight Keaton's boundless wit and dexterity.

Smetana’s symphonic poem The Moldau sets the tone for this evening of musical trendsetters. The Anchorage Symphony is honored to welcome back Rachel Barton Pine a violinist heralded as the most charismatic, virtuosic, and compelling American violinist of her generation. We close the concert featuring another remarkable American musician - Amy Beach - performing the ASO premiere of her Gaelic Symphony - the first symphony, or any type of symphonic work, ever composed by an American woman and premiered by the Boston Symphony in 1896.

Fusing the verve of Brazilian music with the lyrical themes of J.S. Bach is concert opener, Villa-Lobos’ festive Bachianas Brasileiras No. 4. Scriabin’s aptly titled Poem of Ecstasy delivers on themes of passion, love, and creativity. Hailed by Downbeat Magazine for her “scintillating plays of light and subtle colors,” ASO harpist Megan Bledsoe Ward performs Concerto for Harpand Orchestra by preeminent Canadian composer R. Murray Schafer. What better closer than Ravel’s intense and rhythmic Boléro!

Celebrating the 100 birthday of legendary composer and conductor, Leonard Bernstein, the Anchorage Symphony partners with Anchorage Opera to bring you Candide. Based on the novella by Voltaire, this operetta tells the story of Candide and his friends as they go on a round-the-world romp of idealistic optimism that clashes with a series of absurdly unfortunate events.
