Smetana’s symphonic poem The Moldau sets the tone for this evening of musical trendsetters. The Anchorage Symphony is honored to welcome back Rachel Barton Pine a violinist heralded as the most charismatic, virtuosic, and compelling American violinist of her generation. We close the concert featuring another remarkable American musician - Amy Beach - performing the ASO premiere of her Gaelic Symphony - the first symphony, or any type of symphonic work, ever composed by an American woman and premiered by the Boston Symphony in 1896.

Opening the evening is Tchaikovsky's "thunderingly dramatic and achingly beautiful" Romeo & Juliet Fantasy Overture. Scriabin’s aptly titled Poem of Ecstasy delivers on themes of passion, love, and creativity. Hailed by Downbeat Magazine for her “scintillating plays of light and subtle colors,” ASO harpist Megan Bledsoe Ward performs Concerto for Harp and Orchestra by preeminent Canadian composer R. Murray Schafer. What better closer than Ravel’s intense and rhythmic Boléro!

The Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra is a stunning showpiece for orchestra and has been a family favorite in the concert hall for more than 70 years! Benjamin Britten was asked to write the score for a 1946 documentary film, Instruments of the Orchestra, designed to acquaint young people with the characteristics of various instruments. The piece was later adapted for the concert hall for orchestra and narration. This listening adventure for kids of all ages showcases each instrument of the orchestra separately before uniting them all together for an unforgettable ending.

Celebrating the 100 birthday of legendary composer and conductor, Leonard Bernstein, the Anchorage Symphony partners with Anchorage Opera to bring you Candide. Based on the novella by Voltaire, this operetta tells the story of Candide and his friends as they go on a round-the-world romp of idealistic optimism that clashes with a series of absurdly unfortunate events.
